Donations
Solar panel donations to nonprofits through Everybody Solar
BPI is partnering with Everybody Solar, a 501c(3) nonprofit organization based in San Francisco, California. Everybody Solar helps other non-profit U.S. charities go solar by raising money to install solar panels, thus reducing the energy costs for the organization. This allows them to spend their money on achieving their mission, while reducing their impact on the environment. BPI donates in two ways:
- Recurring $200 per month payment, which equates to 1 solar panel
- Carbon offsets for business travel. Learn more about our criteria for calculating offsets here.
Starting in 2017, BPI committed to donate at least 5% of our revenues to Everybody Solar. In 2018, we donated the following amount:
- Recurring monthly amount = $2,451.80
- Carbon offsets = $688
- Additional donation = $37.66 (book sale proceeds)
- Total donation = $3177.46 (2.2% of revenues)
BPI Impact on Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Although we have a small footprint and offset all of our emissions, we are passionate about minimizing our business impact on the environment. We calculated our emissions due to electricity usage, water usage, electric vehicle charging and business travel. In 2018, we generated 4.3 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions for scope 2 (a decrease from 5 tons from last year), and 15.5 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions for scope 3 (an increase from 10 tons last year). We have a goal for 2019 to reduce the amount of emissions by 5% for scope 2 and reduce the amount of emissions by 10% for scope 3.
Volunteer and Pro-Bono Work
Starting in 2017, BPI committed to donate at least 5% of our consulting service and expertise time (pro bono) to nonprofit organizations. In 2018, we achieved that goal by donating 128 hours to nonprofits (6.4% of 2000 typical working hours)
- The volunteer hours consisted of our work through LeanPortland.com, another Oregon Benefit company. Specifically, BPI supported the following nonprofit organizations:
- The Rebuilding Center
- Free Geek
- Portland Metro Restore
- Central City Concern
- Reducing wasted food is a major initiative in the Portland metro area. To help support these efforts, a free workshop series was concluded in 2018 (the last 2 workshops). The entire workshop series explained how the concepts of Lean and Six Sigma can be used to reduce wasted food.
- We held 8 free workshops at Hatch Labs on the topics of Six Sigma, Lean, Behavior Change, and a “Movie Night”, which equated to 15.5 hours of training.
New Book Published
- On September 23, 2018, BPI founder Brion Hurley released his second book, “Lean Six Sigma for Good: Lessons from the Gemba (Volume 1).” It is a compilation of stories from current Lean, Six Sigma and continuous improvement experts who have worked with nonprofits, NGO’s and not-for-profit organizations. The author selects the nonprofit of their choice to give their proceeds. As of the end of 2018, there were 3 downloads.
- Proceeds from book sales totaling $25.57 were donated across 8 nonprofit organizations
- The first book, “Lean Six Sigma for Good” had 859 downloads this year, for a total of 1,350 downloads since its release.
- Proceeds from book donations totaling $37.66 were donated to Everybody Solar through various book formats
