Business Performance Improvement Announces Membership with 1% for the Planet and Partnership with Everybody Solar
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Portland, Oregon, 7/6/18
Business Performance Improvement (BPI) has joined 1% for the Planet, pledging to donate 1% of annual sales to support nonprofit organizations focused on the environment. Nonprofit organizations play a unique and critical role in solving the many challenges facing our planet, and we want to show our commitment to support these organizations to help achieve their goals.
“When I setup BPI, I wanted to make sure that I implemented the sustainability and continuous improvement practices that I’m teaching to my clients, so becoming a B Corporation and a member of 1% for the Planet was an obvious choice,” says founder and principal consultant Brion Hurley.
“Our members lead with purpose and commitment, characteristics that consumers support. We’re excited to welcome Business Performance Improvement to our global network,” says Kate Williams, CEO of 1% for the Planet.
BPI cares deeply about protecting the environment and creating healthy and sustainable communities. We feel that encouraging the use of renewable resources is one important way to achieve this outcome. Through our 1% for the Planet membership, we have continued our partnership with Everybody Solar, who aims to improve communities by giving the gift of clean energy to local charities and nonprofit organizations, which helps them reduce electricity costs and direct their limited resources to the communities they serve.
To date, Everybody Solar has completed 8 projects which have averted 195 tons of CO2 and planted 4,658 trees. The solar panel installations allow these organizations to invest more of their funds directly into their missions: to feed children, provide counseling, support a shelter, educate the community, improve the environment or start a movement. By saving thousands of dollars for those who need it most, and harnessing the power of the sun, Everybody Solar helps local communities thrive.
The most recent Everybody Solar fundraising campaign involved Eugene Science Center (formerly The Science Factory), located in Eugene, Oregon (next to Autzen Stadium at the University of Oregon). The $84,000 raised will allow for the installation of a 32.55 kW photovoltaic (PV) solar energy system, which will save the Eugene Science Center approximately $4,900 per year.
Eugene Science Center, which hosts programs from “no school days” to “Girls’ Science Adventures” enables kids of all ages to grow as they experience science, math, and more. The new solar exhibit will communicate in real and historic time the amount of energy the Eugene Science Center’s rooftop photovoltaic array is generating. A second interactive exhibit will represent in a simple fashion the inner workings of a photovoltaic cell by showcasing how photons from sunlight interact with electrons within the solar panel to produce sustainable energy. Installation is expected to be completed in late 2018.
About 1% for the Planet
1% for the Planet is a global organization that connects dollars and doers to accelerate smart environmental giving. We recognize that the current level of environmental giving – only 3% of total philanthropy – is not enough to solve the most pressing issues facing our planet.
Through our business and individual membership, 1% for the Planet inspires people to support environmental organizations through annual membership and everyday actions. We advise on giving strategies, we certify donations, and we amplify the impact of the network.
Members of 1% for the Planet contribute one percent of annual sales directly to any of the approved nonprofit environmental organizations in the network. Nonprofits are approved based on referrals, track record and environmental focus. Thousands of nonprofits worldwide are currently approved.
Started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, our members have given more than $175 million to environmental nonprofits to date. Today, 1% for the Planet is a network of more than 1,200 member businesses, a new and expanding core with hundreds of individual members, and thousands of nonprofit partners in more than 60 countries.
